The Seton Hall men’s soccer team won its home opener against UMass-Lowell, 2-0, on a muggy Sunday afternoon in South Orange.
The tie in Friday night’s season opener at Rhode Island proved to be a motivator of sorts as sophomore goalkeeper Julian Spindler earned his third career shutout. “It was very important that we got the tie on the road. I remember last season that we didn’t do good on the road,” Spindler said.
The first half ended 0-0 with the Pirates outshooting the River Hawks 9-4 with a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The first Pirate goal came in the 50th minute from senior Bolu Akinyode. Sophomore Sam Geiler took advantage of a free kick and placed the ball in scoring position for his team. Senior Kai Greene, who scored the team’s first goal of the season on Friday night, attempted a shot on goal but it was deflected. Akinyode found the rebound and slid the ball to the left of UMass Lowell freshman goalkeeper Austin Kroll
In the 73rd minute, senior Konrad Plewa was fouled in the River Hawks’ box and was rewarded a penalty kick. Senior Victor Manosalvas drilled the shot into the left side of the net, giving him his first goal of the season and the team-lead in points with three.
Seton Hall will return to action after a long lay-off on Wednesday, September 10, with a road trip to Delaware. The Blue Hens are coming off an NCAA Tournament season.
