Get the help that you need

The Academic Resource Center wants you to consider dropping by if you are struggling with any of your classes this semester.

According to Monica Burnette, director of the Academic Resource Center (ARC), the Center’s mission is to “bring support services together to foster success.” In order to achieve this, ARC hosts skill building workshops and offers tutoring and online resources to help students study.

The Center, located on the second floor of the Arts and Sciences building, hosts three different types of tutoring sessions. The majority of their tutors are peer advisors or teaching assistants. The PAs usually focus on the general subjects while the TAs help with the sciences. The Center also offers tutoring in languages, typically led by members of the faculty.

These faculty tutors have specific hours when they are available for drop-ins. However when necessary, students and tutors can arrange study sessions after hours in places such as the library or Dunkin Donuts. On reading day, ARC runs what Burnette calls a “tutoring bonanza,” where 30 to 40 tutors host non-stop tutoring for three hours.

ARC hosts skill-building workshops throughout the year designed to help students learn how to study, take notes and deal with stress. Every event that ARC offers is an approved Compass event, helpful for students in the University Life course, which requires attendance to that type of event.

Their online resources help students with studying in part by offering videos and tutorials on the best way to take notes in class and study effectively.

ARC joined forces with other academic support services on campus to found the Tutoring Consortium. This is an overarching group intended to unify and improve all of the tutoring services on campus.

ARC is open to all students on campus, from freshmen to graduate students, and is designed to be a “one-stop shop for academic support,” Burnette said. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
