Greek Life Update

The Greek Community will welcome two new sororities to campus next year.

The process of introducing the newest sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi, will begin next week at an information session in the Faculty Lounge on Thursday, May 1.

Zeta Tau Alpha has also been chosen through the College Panhellenic Council recruitment process to colonize and join Seton Hall's Greek Community for spring 2015.

"Bringing a new sorority to campus will add a new dimension to the already vibrant Greek community," Maggie Bach, Assistant Dean of Students for Leadership Development, said. "They will recruit a diverse group of women that may not have found their match with one of our four existing chapters."

"We have started the conversation about expansion for fraternities and they're all really supportive," Bach said.

No set plans have been made yet to move forward with fraternity expansion, but Bach said if they decide to, the Inter Fraternal Council will be allowed to review applications in a similar process as the CPC for which organization would come to campus.

"I think it's best the students make the decision on who comes to campus because you know your community better than we do," Bach said.

Alpha Omicron Pi will be the only sorority eligible to recruit a fall new member class. According to Bach, all current sororities on campus have surpassed the CPC total member maximum of 65.

"It will put everyone on the same playing field in the spring," Bach said. "I think that is the ideal situation that all of the sororities rally around AOPi and recruit for AOPi."

According to Bach, this will put the freshmen class in the spring in a better place to evenly distribute among the organizations.

Alpha Omicron Pi was chosen from 11 sororities that applied to be on campus. AOPi and Zeta Tau Alpha were the top two choices out of the four finalists recommend by an extension committee consisting of a student and alumni from each National Panhellenic Conference Sorority, two students not involved in an organization and two administrators.
