Red-lettered "No Parking" went up along streets in the Tuxedo Park neighborhood after the village enacted emergency measures in response to complaints about overflow parking from Seton Hall University.
The Board of Trustees approved the regulations 6-0 at its meeting Monday.
Village President Alex Torpey said that officials met with Seton Hall officials on Thursday, Friday and Monday. The village instructed the university to close the South Center Street gate, to remove personnel who have been directing traffic on village streets, and to notify students not to park in the Tuxedo Park neighborhood.
The University sent a broadcast email outlining alternatives, including additional parking on South Orange Avenue and, temporarily, on Ward Place.
More than 30 Tuxedo Park residents attended the Board of Trustees meeting to criticize Seton Hall and express their concern about safety in the neighborhood. Residents said Seton Hall was "inconsiderate" and behaving like "a bully." Torpey said he wants to maintain a working relationship with Seton Hall, but added, "At the end of the day, they are South Orange's streets, they are not Seton Hall's streets."
Tracy Gottlieb, vice president of student services, did not respond to requests for comment.
