Seton Hall's chapter of the Zeta Psi fraternity raised more than $2,000 through its hair shaving event on April 29.
About 20 people lined up to get their hair cut at noon while 50 to 100 were expected to show before 3:30 p.m.
"We shave our heads because if kids with cancer go bald, we should go bald as well," freshman marketing major and organizer of the event Brent Ciccarino said.
The boy that Lynch was honoring is 12 years old. He lives in Massachusetts and has brain cancer and spinal cord cancer.
"Cancer affects everyone, and I feel this was the way we could show it," Lynch said.
Zeta Psi runs an event every semester. This semester they also participated in Relay for Life.
"My uncle passed away during Christmas so this is the only way I could think of honoring him," Juan Ramos said.
Zeta Psi teamed up with St. Baldrick's Foundation for Cancer. St. Baldrick's was created in 1999. It was created when Tim Kenny issued a challenge to his colleagues John Bender and Enda McDonnell. McDonnell's thick head of hair gave Bender the idea to have their heads for donations to raise funds for kids with cancer. St. Baldrick's has raised more than $30 million since 2012 by shaving heads and raising funds.
"I felt honored," junior and sports management major Kevin Lynch said. "I grew my hair out for 18 months."
