Women's golf spends break on Orlando courses

The women's golf team spent their spring break in Orlando, Fla. practicing all week and eventually playing a Ryder Cup format scrimmage against Long Island University and Yale University on Saturday.

"It was a great week for the team to get prepared for the season," Head Coach Sara Doell said. "I think they're ready to go for next week."

The team had four practice sessions, playing 18 holes per day, Doell said.

Throughout the week Doell set up two-on-two matches and best-ball competitions.

"We did a great job of practicing," she said. "Everyone seemed really focused and committed to the week."

It was not all business, however. A day off was given during the week, which allowed the team to visit Disney World.

Doell said she does not like to use the word "expectations," but has set some team goals for the season.

"We have improved quite a bit from last year," Doell said. "We did set some team goals to win a tournament, finish in the top three in the Big East, and we want our scoring average from this spring to be better than last spring."

The Pirates have no seniors on the team, but that has not proved to be a concern for coach Doell. The team has five juniors on the roster that were the team's first recruits.

"I think it's a long term advantage because it's great to have that kind of leadership up top," Doell said. "If you take what we have now and add a year of experience, I know that we can be even better."

The team will compete in the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational in Crystal River, Fla., on Friday, March 22 .
