The softball team brought home three runs in the top of the fifth inning against Tuesday en route to a 6-2 win over the University of Maryland.
Sophomore Danielle DeStaso threw a complete game, improving her record on the season to 3-1. DeStaso kept the Terrapins in check, only relinquishing two runs on five hits while striking out two.
The Pirate offense was supplied in most part by freshman Alex Rabbetts and junior Maria DeLuca, who together drove in five of the team's six runs.
Sophomore Sara Haefeli got it started the scoring started in the top of the fifth with a leadoff double, and after an infield single from freshman Yasmin Harrell, she eventually came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of senior Brittany Hammer.
DeLuca collected her RBIs on the day when she doubled to center scoring Harrell and Hammer.
After DeStaso kept the Terps at bay in the fifth and sixth, the Pirates cushioned their lead a little more in the top half of the seventh.
DeStaso reached on a fielder's choice and DeLuca reached safe on error, the table was set for Rabbetts, and she delivered in a huge way launching her first career home run giving the Pirates a 6-0 advantage.
But the Terps didn't go quietly in the seventh. After loading the bases with one out, Maryland's Lexi Carroll was plunked forcing in Nikki Maier who had led the inning off with a single.
But the Hall thwarted any kind of threat with an alert defensive play to end the game. A routine sac fly to centerfield ended tragically for UMD as they were doubled up inching off of second base, resulting in the 6-2 win for the Pirates.
Seton Hall will continue their 23-game road trip to open the season as they head down to the University of Virginia for a Thursday afternoon showdown.
