Local Natives makes a return with its new album "Hummingbird," released on Jan. 29.
The indie band's debut album "Gorilla Manor" was successful in establishing a fan base with its unique style and interesting sound. In "Hummingbird," Local Natives present the same spirit while offering something new.
With any band's sophomore album, there will always be comparisons to their first. The lack of energy presented with "Hummingbird" is obvious. Unlike "Gorilla Manor," few songs in "Hummingbird" stood out. Local Natives had a lot of potential to show their versatility with the album but it seems as if they held back and missed the mark.
While the album didn't quite live up to expectations, there are a few songs that have redeeming qualities. "Breakers," stands out the most on the album. The vocals and lyrics, as well as the overall sound, are great.
Overall the album is acceptable but it unquestionably comes up short in comparison to the band's previous success. The type of complacency presented with "Hummingbird" is often fatal to the careers of many artists but hopefully Local Natives will redeem themselves in the future.
