The men's soccer team was shut out on the road by the No. 5 Marquette Golden Eagles, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.
The Big East powerhouse Golden Eagles improve to 14-1 overall on the season while the Pirates fall to 6-9. With the victory over the Seton Hall, Marquette was able to clinch its fourth consecutive postseason berth.
After holding the Golden Eagles to only 5 shots in the first half, none of which were on goal, the Pirates could only be satisfied with a 0-0 tie heading into the half. Marquette made the necessary adjustments at the half and came out with eight shots; two of which went for scores.
Senior Anthony Selvaggi took only one shot the entire game for the Golden Eagles, and it would end up being the game-winning goal. The score came in the 54th minute of play after sophomore Sebastian Jansson and Junior Paul Dillon combined for the assist.
Selvaggi also provided the assist for his junior teammate Eric Pothast to score the second goal of the game in the 67th minute. Pothast scored his fourth goal of the season after getting his own rebound and finding the net.
Seton Hall managed only seven shots throughout the entire match compared to Marquette's 13. Marquette goalkeeper Charlie Lyon, a redshirt sophomore, had three saves on the day to record his ninth shutout of the season
Seton Hall's schedule does not get any easier as they host nationally ranked Georgetown on Wednesday. The Hoyas(13-2-1) gave Marquette their only loss on the season just a week ago.
