The soundtrack of one of the most highly anticipated movies this fall, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," based on the novel of the same name, debuted in stores and online Sept. 18. The album maintains a strong indie sound with a 12-song collection.
The album, which featured alternative rock gems from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, is likely to fly under the radar during a busy September for new indie releases such as The Killers and Band of Horses. But make no mistake, the "Perks" soundtrack is a solid ensemble of hits and rarities that indie lovers are sure to enjoy.
What makes this soundtrack truly stand out is the fact that the director, Stephen Chbosky, who also wrote the novel, selected the tunes for showcase on the soundtrack. From the opening song "Could it be Another Change" by The Samples, it is clear that the soundtrack moves in a melancholy direction, which perfectly complements the flick. British indie legends The Smiths also make an appearance with their hypnotic track "Asleep." Despite the pensive overall feel of the soundtrack, the iconic Sonic Youth single "Teenage Riot" and Dexys Midnight Runners 1980s dance-pop sensation "Come on Eileen" help to throw some energy into mix.
Although true fans of the novel may be disappointed that the soundtrack only features one song that is mentioned in the book, "Asleep," they can surely appreciate the quality in the music that was chosen.
"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is set to hit theaters everywhere on Oct. 5. If the film turns out to be anything like the soundtrack, then viewers are certainly in for a treat. Although some of the songs on the soundtrack may be unfamiliar to the average listener because they come from a much different era, it is sure to impress if given the chance.
The Setonian gives this album 4 out of 5 stars.
