The Seton Hall Women's Basketball team lost to ACC foe Wake Forest 60-44 at Walsh Gym on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (5-4) were led by senior guard Jasmine Crew and junior guard Brittany Morris, who both scored 11 points. Wake Forest was led by reserve guard Chelsea Douglas, who led all scorers in the game with 14 points. Secily Ray and Latevia Boykin added 11 points apiece for the Demon Deacons (6-1).
Seton Hall dominated in the rebounding category, snaring 51 rebounds compared to Wake Forest's 38. They had 26 offensive rebounds in the contest. Senior center Tajay Ashmeade led all players with 12 boards.
But there was a lid on the basket all game long for the Pirates, who shot just 22% against the pressuring, trapping defense of the Deacons, including 4-24 from three point range and 5-27 in the second half (19%). Crew and Morris combined for just 6-31 from the field. The Pirates also committed 20 turnovers.
"This was just one of those nights where the ball wouldn't go down," Seton Hall head coach Anne Donovan said after the game. "(Wake Forest) increased their pressure and their traps, both in the man and the zone (defenses), and we struggled with it. We'd get down to a low (shot) clock situation, rely on Jasmine (Crew) to try and create something, and throw up a shot. We just didn't play smart tonight."
Despite the struggles, the Pirates were within 7 points of the Deacons with about 6 minutes to go in the second half before Douglas hit the first of her three late three pointers for Wake Forest, stretching the lead to 10. Seton Hall would draw within 7 again on a three from Morris while she was fouled with under 4 minutes to go. But Morris missed the ensuing free throw, and Douglas hit two threes down the stretch to seal the victory.
After the loss, Crew put some of the blame on herself.
"I need to do a better job of getting us into our offense, finding my teammates when my shots are not falling," Crew said. "That's something I'll concentrate on for the next game."
The Pirates return to action this Friday when they welcome perennial powerhouse UConn to Walsh Gym for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Tipoff is set for 7 PM.
