Seton Hall has named Gerson Echeverry as the new men's soccer coach as announced by Athletic Director Patrick Lyons on Monday.
He replaces Manfred Schellscheidt who held the position for 24 years before stepping down from the position in November.
"After a thorough and extensive search, which included several highly qualified candidates, I am very pleased to welcome Gerson back to Seton Hall," Lyons said. "His impressive ledger of experience on both the collegiate and international levels, combined with his intimate knowledge of our program as a student-athlete and coach, make him the ideal successor to Manfred Schellscheidt. We believe he has the tools to build on the foundation set by Manfred and take this program to new heights."
Echeverry graduated from Seton Hall in 1994 after playing for the Pirates and spent time playing professional soccer in Columbia and the MLS.
After playing professionally, Echeverry was the top assistant coach at the Hall for five years helping to coach three NCAA Tournament teams before taking an assistant coach position with the United States Soccer Federation Under-17 men's national team and residency program where he has coached for the past three years.
As a member of the Pirates he ranks fourth in school history with 114 points, third with 32 assists and sixth with 41 goals. In 1991, Echeverry finished the season third nationally with 52 points and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Big East Championship, Big East Offensive Player of the Year and was a Third-Team All-American.
