The women's basketball team suffers their first loss of the season 51-47 to Michigan, Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates now have a record of 3-1.
"This was a great test for us," head coach Anne Donovan said. "I like the fight in this team, I like how they battle. We just didn't have enough to come out on top."
Junior Alexandra Maseko led the way for the Hall scoring 12 points and also pulling down a team high seven rebounds.
The Pirates trailed at the half 27-23 after Michigan closed the half on a 14-0 run, with senior Jasmine Crew playing on seven minutes due to foul trouble.
"Offensively we are a different team without Jasmine Crew," Donovan said. "So her three fouls hurt us with what we could do especially in transition."
Crew finished the game with nine points and five assists in 27 minutes on the court.
However, the Hall came out in the second half and slowly closed the gap taking the 41-40 lead with 8:32 remaining in the half.
With the teams tied at 43-43, Michigan's Rachel Sheffer made two free throws with 5:34 remaining to give the Wolverines the lead for good.
Sheffer led all players with 18 points including 12 coming from the free throw line.
Crew would hit a fade away jump shot with only 35 seconds to go, cutting the Michigan lead to one but the Wolverines would hit their free throws late in the game to clinch the victory over the Hall.
"We have gotten off to a really good start," Maseko said. "It has also revealed what we have to work on especially our consistency."
The Pirates next play on Thursday, Nov. 24 against Louisiana Tech in the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
