Even though it is still November, the Holidays are already in full swing at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn N.J. This year, to celebrate the season, the area's largest playhouse is presenting a six week run of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas."
The musical tells the story of two World War II veterans turned famous musicians who stage a show the benefit their former troop captain's struggling Vermont inn.
The play is based on the Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye film of the same name but fans of the movie should know that the version made for the stage does not follow the story exactly. While the plot is familiar, there are noticeable variations including the addition of new characters and more comedic twists.
While the story is not exactly what viewers may remember, the performance is still exciting, complete with the explosive song and dance numbers one would expect from a Broadway show rather than a local playhouse.
The cast is strong, with particularly memorable performances from a large ensemble cast that round out the song and dance numbers and give life to the play. The play's standout performers, though, are Meredith Paterson and James Clow who play Judy Haynes and Bob Wallace. Another notable cast member is Cliff Bemis who does a hilarious job portraying Ezekiel Foster, a Vermont local and the play's comedic relief.
The musical also has an epic finally, complete with an indoor snow storm to really bring out the holiday season of anyone in the audience.
To keep the spirit of Christmas present at the playhouse, even for those who are not attending "White Christmas" the Paper Mill will also be presenting a Free Holiday Village and Animated Light Spectacular. Patrons are invited to visit the playhouse seven days a week through Dec. 24 for presentations from local choirs as well as a gift bazaar and free hot chocolate and apple cider.
Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased by calling 973-376-4343 or online at papermill.org. The playhouse is a short walk from the Millburn train station. From Seton Hall, the playhouse is only two stops away on the train.
