The softball team dropped a doubleheader on Wednesday to St. John's, falling to 12-21 on the season and remaining winless in Big East play, 0-8.
St. John's, 15-21 overall, earned their first and second conference wins bringing their record to 2-4 in Big East contests.
The Red Storm won the second game, 8-5, despite only having four runs batted in.
"We're starting to hit a little better, we're putting the ball in play and we're scoring some runs," head coach Ray Vander May said. "We have to eliminate errors and mistakes, wild pitches and passed balls, and then we can start to turn it around."
Seton Hall threatened in the bottom of the seventh as senior Michelle Reed led the inning off with an infield single to third. Reed advanced all the way to third on two wild pitches before freshman Maria DeLuca took first on a walk.
The Pirates then scored runs on senior Brittany Schillizzi's single to center and sophomore Kirby Grove's groundout to third, yet failed to overcome the three-run deficit.
Seton Hall gave up the 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, allowing five Red Storm runs on two hits and two defensive errors leading to a 7-3 St John's advantage.
"We've been struggling," Reed said. "We have a couple of good innings and then we make some errors and kind of fall apart so we just have to come together defensively and stay tough."
Reed and senior Nalin Bennett both collected two hits for the Hall, with Reed stealing a base and scoring three runs and Bennett knocking in a RBI. Sophomore Brooke Tull also tallied a RBI.
Freshman Jen Metzger took the loss after pitching three innings and giving up two earned runs, bringing her to 5-6 on the year. Metzger struck out three but also walked four.
The Pirates lost the first game of the twin bill in eight innings, 5-3, after Reed's RBI single to left field brought in junior Jeanette Ragucci to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
The Red Storm scored two runs in the top of the eighth on three hits to take the lead, which Seton Hall could not surmount in their final three at-bats in the bottom half.
Metzger took the loss after throwing all eight innings, giving up five earned runs while striking out seven.
Reed led the Pirates again with two out of the team's four hits and two RBIs.
"We've been getting better," Reed said. "All we can do is stay positive, keep fighting and not give up."
Seton Hall fell to Louisville (26-10, 5-1) on Sunday, 9-3, completing the three-game weekend sweep by the Cardinals.
Louisville scored the first seven runs of the game, four of the RBIs coming from Katie Keller's bat, until pinch-hitter Tull knocked in two runs on a bases-loaded single in the fifth inning.
Reed then singled to bring in junior Marissa Muoio and cut the deficit to 7-3, yet a groundout and a strikeout ended the fifth for the Pirates.
The Cardinals were held scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, yet put two more runs on the board in the sixth to give them the decisive 9-3 advantage.
Sophomore Hannah Hill fell to 5-11 on the year after giving up nine earned runs on 11 hits in five innings. She also struck out two and walked four batters.
Reed led the Pirates with two hits and an RBI, while Tull recorded one hit and two RBIs.
Seton Hall lost the first two games on Saturday, 7-2 in the first, and 10-2 in five innings in the second.
Freshman Meredith Henze collected two hits and two RBIs in the first game and junior Kristen Kaelin tallied a RBI in the second game.
"We have to play solid defense," Vander May said. "When we eliminate the mistakes, we'll start to win."
The Pirates return to action on Saturday at noon to begin a three-game series against in-state Big East rival Rutgers in Piscataway.
