As the last full month of school concludes, end-of-the-year celebrations draw near. But before seniors congregate to celebrate graduation, this year there is the conveniently-placed-on-a-Thursday holiday for all of campus to enjoy, Cinco de Mayo.
While often confused with Mexican Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This year to observe the holiday, Seton Hall will include Cinco de Mayo celebrations in its Spring Fling activities.
Sarah Olsen, co-chair of the Special Events Committee, said that the festivities will include a fiesta party at 1 p.m. in the Main Lounge. The party will have a taco bar, Spanish music, Rita's Italian Ices, as well as lots of giveaway prizes for all students. However, this will not be the only hot spot on campus next Thursday.
The baseball field will be an eventful area, not just because the Pirates will be playing Louisville, but also because of the Cinco de Mayo festivities organized around the game. The Cinco de Mayo Pirate Baseball Pandemonium will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and will include free Mexican food, face painting, a piñata, games and awards for Best Male and Female Fans of the Game. Given college students' penchants for free food and sports, it would be a safe bet to get to the baseball field early.
Those who enjoy the night life of South Orange will have plenty to do once the day's activities end. Toro Loco, the village's popular Mexican Restaurant, will have a half-price drink menu for the Cinco de Mayo celebrations in addition to free giveaways from Dos Equis.
For those who live on or off campus, there is no shortage of activities or parties to celebrate May 5.
