SGA to launch tray-less initiative on Earth Day to improve sustainability

The Student Government Association discussed a tray-less initiative trial run beginning on Earth Day, as well as previous initiatives such as improving library services and extending the honors curriculum to other schools within the University, at their weekly meeting on March 14.

President Melissa Boege said the tray-less initiative, which focuses on removing trays from the Caf, is better for the environment.

"Looking at surveys, a majority of students from our school and across the country support the removal of trays to improve sustainability on campus," Boege said. "That's why it is really important that it a gets a trial run this year starting from Earth day till the end of this semester."

John Signorello, associate vice president for Facilities and Engineering, and Dr. Laura Wankel, vice president of Student Affairs, were among the University members Boege spoke with.

Boege also announced the arrival of "Enough is Enough Week," an anti-violence program, and urged members of the student body to attend the World Leadership Forum sponsored by the Whitehead School of Diplomacy on March 21 in Jubilee.

Senator Drew Holden has been working on a survey to gauge student satisfaction regarding the campus's library services. He has also been collaborating with Chrysanthy Grieco, dean of the University Libraries.

"First we're trying to push back the library opening time on Sundays from three in the afternoon to noon," Holden said. "We're looking to get as much student feedback as possible. Good, bad, indifferent we're planning on getting all of it."

Senator Elizabeth Gabriel is working on getting an honors curriculum for the College of Nursing. Gabriel met with Christopher Kaiser, associate dean for Undergraduate Student Services and Enrollment Management, and is currently working on drafting a proposal to Dr. Linda Ulak, associate dean of the School of Nursing.

"We're looking to apply the honors curriculum to Group Dynamics Research in Nursing and Leadership in Nursing," Gabriel said.

Elections for new senators and E-board members are underway.

Senator David Castrillon announced the German Club festival this Friday. He also announced a paper crane donation drive to help with relief effort in Japan, though the time and location have not yet been specified.

Senator Derel Stroud announced the installation of machinery for smoothies is underway, and the smoking initiatives are still being worked on.
