The Setonian has won 12 awards in the 2010-2011 New Jersey College Newspaper Contest, as announced on Tuesday.
The awards were selected by active or former editors, writers and photographers of New Jersey Press Association member newspapers.
Submissions between Mar. 1, 2010 and Feb. 28, 2011 were judged.
Seniors Brian Wisowaty and Jessica Sutcliffe were honored with a first-place award in the deadline reporting category for The Setonian.com's coverage of September's fatal off-campus shooting at an East Orange house party.
Sophomore Emily Lake also earned a first place honor for "Exploring Exorcism," a feature story that showcased a Seton Hall priest in response to the motion picture "The Last Rite."
Setonian cartoonist Mark Buryk rounded out the first-place honorees with his editorial cartoon about the SHUFLY time changes. Buryk took two editorial cartoon awards overall in the contest.
Sophomore Chris Paizis won a second-place award for "Pirate ‘survives' Redemption Island," a profile on a Seton Hall Law alumnus David Murphy who appeared on the CBS television show "Survivor."
Sutcliffe earned second place in the investigative reporting category for "Allergic Reaction," a follow-up to the fall incident involving a food allergy in the Caf.
Junior Milan Stanic also received a second place award for his sports photography.
Third-place recognitions for The Setonian included junior Nicholas Parco's feature on the St. Patrick's statue that resided at Cryan's Beef and Ale House this semester.
Junior Brenden Higashi also won a third-place award for his column, "All Catholic views on LGBTQ issues should be heard."
Wisowaty and Sutcliffe earned a second collaborative honor, a third-place award, for their deadline coverage of the false sexual assault incident from this fall on The Setonian.com.
From the spring of 2010, former Setonian Editor in Chief Meghan St. John and Wisowaty took home a third-place award for their report on the firing of then-men's basketball head coach Bobby Gonzalez.
Also, former Pirate Life editor Dana Cassidy and current student Mustafa Ziberi won third prize for a review last year of the video game "God of War."
