Hall student leaves Cairo due to protests

The whereabouts and safety of a Seton Hall student studying abroad in Cairo were unknown as of Monday, according to Mary Kirk Rawn, a University spokeswoman, as reported by The Star Ledger.

Contact with the student was finally established Tuesday morning.

"I am delighted to report that he is safe, and that he is planning to return to the U.S. as soon as possible," Rawn said in an e-mail.

The Setonian contacted the student, who is currently in Germany since leaving Egypt, on Wednesday evening.

He declined to be identified or to comment further on the situation until he had the chance to meet with University administrators.

On Jan. 25, Egyptians began protesting in Tahrir Square, located in Cairo. The protesters are calling for the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. The president announced on Tuesday he would be stepping down in September.

The U.S. Embassy in Egypt has advised Americans to leave. The Star Ledger reported nine New Jersey students were flown out of the country Monday; four were from Rutgers while five others were from Princeton.
