Spring fashion is most commonly associated with intricate patterns, numerous floral pieces and bright pastel colors. While these looks are still present in the Spring 2011 shows from fashion week in New York, another more classic look has played a role in this season's trends.
Minimalism has had a huge influence over a number of designers like Akris and Prada. Although minimalism has been around for some time, the designers for this season incorporated the spring trends in their own unique ways.
Minimalism is usually coupled with neutral and reserved colors. Many designers have added a twist to the look. Raf Simon's, the creative director at Jill Sander, along with his team created a spring line that embraced the loud colors of spring while maintaining the minimalist look.
Many of the ensembles seen in the beginning of the show consisted of extremely brightly colored bottoms paired with a plain and simple white t-shirt. As the show continued, the colors became more vibrant and the plain white t-shirt was replaced with pastel-colored blazers and tops.
Jill Sander was not the only line that added a creative look to the minimalist trend. Alexander Wang altered the look of the "typical" minimalist outfit by using a mostly white fashion line. Not only did he use this popular shade seen all over the shows this season, but he also incorporated other trends like sheer fabrics, futuristic looks, military and metallic to the creations.
Another line that was inspired by the minimalist look was Lanvin. Alber Elbaz, the artistic director of the line, also incorporated spring trends like sheer, metallic and military. However, he also used minimalism to place emphasis on accessories.
In a number of his looks, he paired the attire with several key accessories, including shoes, bags, clutches, belts, jewelry and sunglasses. These pieces helped create a more complete look and also provided a slimming effect.
The trend towards minimalism can be found in a number of places including Steve Madden, J. Crew, Burberry, Rag & Bone and Rachel Roy. The minimalist look is timeless and provides a lot of flexibility when creating a look. The simple, lean lines are flattering on most body types.
This look can also be accessorized in numerous ways, which include wearing statement-bearing boots or large chunky jewelry or even tying a simple belt around the waist to create a more form-fitting look. The options with this trend are innumerable.
As spring approaches, new merchandise fills the stores. The spring fashion helps create optimism in this seemingly never-ending winter.
When asked about her opinion on the upcoming season, Seton Hall University student McKenna Ronquillo said, "The season is refreshing. After being around the same intense look from the fall season for some time, the spring collection seems to bring a light and airy flare that's been missing."
