South Orange is holding a photography contest, "Picture South Orange" which will be open to Seton Hall students and South Orange residents.
The Campus Engagement Committee of the Seton Hall/South Orange partnership is hosting a photography contest to encourage SHU students to visit downtown South Orange where there are many eateries and shops. In addition, students would be exposed to the many activities that take place in the community and could participate in them.
Photographs for the contest must be of South Orange and Maplewood only. Participants will be allowed to submit up to 10 entries.
The winner's photographs will be displayed in downtown shop windows or the art gallery at the Baird. It is also possible that the photographs will be incorporated into a calendar. Entries will be judged by local photographers.
Drawing the students into down town South Orange is something that more business owners would like to see according to Ben Salmon, the owner of Kitchen a la mode, located on South Orange Avenue.
Despite store owners desire to see more students in downtown, many students feel that they are not aware of activities going on in South Orange, therefore, lessening their reasons to go there.
Seminary student, Jakov Vidov, added that he does not think that there is enough information on what is going on is town and was surprised to hear about the photography contest, as were many other students that were surveyed on campus.
Freshman Clara Brunkorst added that "any program that unites (the town of South Orange and Seton Hall) is beneficial… and photography is a great base"
There are four submission deadlines of photos for the remainder of this year: March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31.
