Seton Hall defeated Notre Dame in a 90-87 victory Thursday night, snapping a three game conference losing streak and a six game losing streak against the Fighting Irish.
Head coach Bobby Gonzalez earned his first win over Notre Dame of his Seton Hall career.
"It was a very important win for us tonight," Gonzalez said. "We really wanted to win this game and we knew it was important coming off three tough road losses."
Gonzalez stressed the importance of winning at home, noting that the seniors, Eugene Harvey and John Garcia, only have four home games left on the schedule.
After a poor shooting display in Pittsburgh last weekend, junior guard Jeremy Hazell tallied 35 points, shooting 8-11 from behind the arc, adding three rebounds and four steals.
Harvey hit two free throws to put the Pirates up 90-85, until Tyrone Nash drove through the middle to finish a layup cutting Seton Hall's lead to three points with 33 seconds left.
After missing the front end of two one and one situations from the charity stripe, the Pirates allowed Notre Dame to get off two treys that both had potential to tie the game in the last five seconds.
Harvey added nine points on 6-6 shooting from the foul line, dealing 10 assists and only turning the ball over once.
The Pirates shot 60.7% from the field in the first half, along with an amazing 77.8% mark from three point range hitting 7-9 and 61.5% from the foul line.
Junior forward Jeff Robinson outscored Big East leading scorer Luke Harangody with 14 points, despite both players leaving the game early.
Robinson fouled out and Harangody left the game early with 13 points after tweaking his knee.
The Pirates return to the Prudential Center to face DePaul University at noon on Sunday.
