The Jewish Student Union hopes to host a concert in mid to late March featuring rap artist, Big Sean, in order to raise funds for Haiti.
Because the concert is to benefit those affected by the Haiti Earthquake, Big Sean was willing to drop his normal concert fee.
Tickets will cost about $15 and all money raised would be donated through the Division of Volunteer Efforts to the Catholic Relief Effort.
"We didn't really get to choose the organization," Sebastian Zar, vice president of the Jewish Student Union said. "They do great work all over the world, though, so I'm sure they will be able to do a lot with whatever money we raise."
Last semester, the Jewish Student Union hosted a concert featuring performer Mike Posner. Zar was one of the main coordinators of this event.
"After the earthquake in Haiti hit, people were saying that I should do another concert," Zar said.
Zar said he was approached by Big Sean to play a concert at Seton Hall.
"He is putting out a lot of new music and wants to get it out there so he was interested," Zar said. "I told him our budget and he seemed like he was willing to put an affordable show on for us as a benefit concert."
The Jewish Student Union is able to cover some of the cost for his performance but asks other clubs to co-sponsor the event.
"I am aiming for a mid to end of March date because I don't want the momentum of the Haiti fundraising to wear off," Zar said, adding the absolute latest he would hold the concert would be in early April.
The Haitian Organization Promoting Education has shown interest in co-sponsoring the event. Other organizations expressing interest are Amnesty International, the ONE Campaign and the Accounting Club.
"I think it is important to work with other organizations to get big events on campus, especially ones that raise money for a tragedy like the earthquake in Haiti," Sophomore and President of the ONE Campaign Alyssa Alfano said.
Sophomore Daniel Penrice said he would go if the concert was more affordable or if an artist he was more interested in was performing.
"It would be fun to see, but there is more I could do for $15," Penrice said.
Aside from Big Sean, the concert will feature a performance by the rapper Scott Free, a junior from the University of Maryland.
Big Sean is a 22-year-old rapper from Detroit, Mich. who was recently discovered by Kanye West. He is currently recording his new album "Finally Famous."
Zar explained his desire to bring a concert to Seton Hall.
"The All-American Rejects played here during my senior year of sigh school," Zar said. "I missed the last big concert at Seton Hall so I really just want to make something happen."
Sophomore Sean Slavin said, "I think a lot of people would go if it was advertised well."
